2 HRS AGO - Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports
The Cowboys could certainly use another wide receiver. When James Washington went down with a significant foot injury near the start of camp, it seemed like a given the Cowboys would bring in an outside receiver to help fill the void. So far, that has not been the case, and Dallas has continued to push the narrative that they believe in some of their young, unproven wideouts.
While this may be the case right now, a lot can change after the Cowboys play their first preseason game this Saturday. If the Cowboys are not impressed with what they see from some of their young pass catchers, they may decide it is finally time to go out and bring in a veteran at the receiver position.
If the Cowboys were to look to acquire a receiver via trade, one potential option could be 29-year-old Nelson Agholor. In a recent article by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, Dallas was named as a potential landing spot if Agholor was to be dealt.

While these Cowboys players are not listed as starters yet, things could change quickly. On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys released their first unofficial depth chart. There were not a lot of surprises in the starting rotation. With the Cowboys retaining a decent portion of their 2021 roster, the players taking first reps are similar to last year.
But there are still question marks about which 22 men will be starters in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Will Tyler Smith be the starting left guard? Who is the WR3 on the team? What about the jumble of players at the DT position? Out of that uncertainty, three unexpected names could be taking the first team reps by September 11th.
A quick note, first-round pick Tyler Smith will not be listed here. While Connor McGovern is currently the starting LG per the depth chart, that seems more like a placeholder than anything. Maybe Smith isn’t the starter yet, but Collapse

The Cowboys plan at receiver includes the second-year draft pick from Stanford. The Cowboys have had different receivers make big plays throughout training camp, looking to fill the void left behind by Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson. While new faces like Jalen Tolbert, Dennis Houston, and KaVontae Turpin have all stepped up, another encouraging sign is the way top receiver CeeDee Lamb has taken over drills, and other receivers with experience like Noah Brown, T.J. Vasher, and Simi Fehoko have all progressed.
Tuesday’s practice was another standout day for Fehoko, who’s quickly becoming a target Dak Prescott and the Cowboys QBs can look for on contested throws.

The Cowboys overpaid, and it’s not even close. We’ll start by getting this out of the way. Ezekiel Elliott is a very talented football player. He brings value to any team he is on. He is a durable running back, he is a fierce blocker in pass protection, and he can be a very productive player. The Cowboys are a better team with him on the roster, although the ability to replace him probably isn’t as hard as the Cowboys staff thinks it would be.
Elliott came into the league with some maturity issues, but he quickly transitioned into a pro and is among the leaders on the Cowboys roster. There is just a lot to like about Elliott, both professionally and personally. By all accounts he has an engaging personality that endears him to players and coaches alike.
But as we all know, there are some problems associated with Elliott. One is his declining production, the other is his outsized contract. We’ll leave the production issue for another day. The Collapse

Just how bad is this for Dallas? Over at ESPN, Bill Barnwell has looked at the biggest weakness for 14 teams that are cited as contenders. The Dallas Cowboys make the list, but their issue is actually part of what could be considered a ‘good news. bad news’ scenario.
First, let’s see the issue.
Dallas Cowboys
Chances to make the playoffs, per ESPN’s FPI: 70.2%
Achilles’ heel: Kicker
The Cowboys led the league in points scored in spite of their kicking last season. Greg Zuerlein hit just under 83% of his field goals and failed on six of his 48 extra point tries, leading a cap-strapped team to cut him. It was no surprise the organization tried to find a cheaper solution at the position, especially given that it once landed on a longtime kicker in undrafted free agency by signing Dan Bailey in 2011.
So kicker is the pick, not wide receiver, offensive line or anything else.
The first bit of good news is that the article considers the Collapse

The Cowboys should be encouraged by their running backs production so far in training camp. If it wasn’t for their struggling kicking competition taking some attention away from the Cowboys wide receivers, they would be the hottest topic of training camp. As the Cowboys are trying to develop young players like T.J. Vasher, Dennis Houston, and KaVontae Turpin, they’ve also seen experienced players like CeeDee Lamb, Noah Brown, and Dalton Schultz make big plays.
Doing this against Dan Quinn’s defense is no easy task, but questions will still remain when the Cowboys face live competition and defenses that can prepare for their scheme. With so many new faces in the lineup, the Cowboys haven’t shown too many new wrinkles in Kellen Moore’s offense, instead using two of their best playmakers in a more dynamic role.
Getting their offensive lineman blocking out in space on the second level has been a focus, and with that Ezekiel Elliott and Collapse

The Cowboys have brought on their own issues in the kicking game. The Dallas Cowboys have a kicker problem. Every day when we recap the practices here at BTB there is always some note about how the kickers struggled. Issues have played hot potato between rookie UDFA Jonathan Garibay and veteran Lirim Hajrullahu, but ultimately neither has shown reason to trust them in an actual NFL game with everything on the line.
This is all the doing (or rather the not doing) of the Dallas Cowboys front office. We have spoken before about this, but in case you forgot the Cowboys literally employed the worst extra point kicker in the NFL last year. That isn’t hyperbole or a statement made for dramatic effect. It is an objective fact.
You would assume that this would have led to a reevaluation of how the Cowboys evaluate the kicker position. They have seemingly never really evaluated anyone in the John Fassel era. Shortly after he joined the team’s Collapse

A premature look at the potential 53 for the Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys have wrapped up the open practices in Oxnard and are headed to the Rocky Mountains for some joint work with the Denver Broncos before playing them in their first preseason game. We have been watching the reports out of training camp for every shred of information about the team they will field. Preseason games and the practices, mostly closed, from here on will add more information that could well shuffle things. But based on the data so far, here is an early attempt at a roster projection. Think of it as a first draft.
A few notes. Players in ALL CAPS are expected starters or key role players, like Tony Pollard. Those in italics are those who could be challenged by someone who still emerges. For backups, being to the left indicates they are more secure than players to the right.

It is time to evaluate and learn for Dallas. The Dallas Cowboys are playing a football game this week. Yes, really. It has been a long time since last season ended in underwhelming fashion, and we are in the eleventh hour of the ‘No Football Time’ in our lives.
Obviously the preseason is not the same thing as the regular season, but it is interesting in its own way (beyond the fact that it is football at the bare minimum which is what we have been craving). The next few weeks will provide us with the best possible opportunity to learn about the players competing for spots further down this roster and players who will be leaned on at different times over the coming months.
These days it is difficult to find a Cowboys fan who feels like they can totally trust the team, but we have reached the point where we will have concrete information to support whatever side we are arguing for. We cannot learn everything from the preseason, but we can Collapse

What’s wrong with a little cautious optimism? Guess who’s back, back again? Brett Maher is back, tell a friend. That’s right, the Cowboys signed Maher to the roster Tuesday after holding a tryout for him and three other kickers. They waived rookie Jonathan Garibay, who had been thoroughly outplayed by Lirim Hajrullahu throughout training camp, to make room for Maher.
The fan reaction was about what you’d expect given that Maher’s nearly two years in Dallas was marked by frustrating inconsistency. It didn’t help that Maher made the roster in 2018 by kicking out Dan Bailey, although hindsight tells us the Cowboys were right to move on from Bailey when they did.
Maher quickly impressed with his powerful leg, routinely drilling field goals from well beyond 55 yards and owning two of the ten longest made field goals (62 and 63 yards) in NFL history. However, he was wildly inconsistent on shorter field goals, hitting just 62.5% of his Collapse

Will Grier vs. Cooper Rush: Cowboys QB Change Behind Dak Prescott? - Mike Fisher, CowboysSI.com
Cooper Rush’s win at the Vikings last year still stands out, but he has to separate himself from Will Grier this preseason.
Grier is entering his second season with the Cowboys after joining the team in September of 2021. He didn’t play last season, but the former third-round pick from West Virginia did spend time in the classroom. And that is starting to pay off, it seems, with a competition brewing between him and Rush.
Rush has his win at Minnesota last year to his credit. He’s 28, came to Dallas as a UDFA, and has bounced back and forth as a member of the club.
Grier is 27, lacks skins on the wall - he started twice in his rookie season of 2019, both losses - and is still trying to find his NFL way.

The reigning unanimous Defensive Rookie of the Year came into this league as an off-ball linebacker. He was excellent at that role from the moment he stepped onto the field in Week 1. However, injuries to other defensive players on the roster led Parsons to show fans the Swiss Army-knife player he truly is.

Flip-flopping both players throughout each game would be a smart game plan.
The addition of Anthony Barr to the linebacker unit instantly creates a tandem with Micah Parsons that’s reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel, in that the Dallas Cowboys are hoping the two can make beautiful defensive music together that ultimately becomes a bridge over troubled water, i.e., their longstanding Super Bowl drought.
“There’s a possibility,” said Parsons, before dropping a bit of a preview into what their music might sound like. “But don’t forget, Barr told me he likes to rush too, so to have that switch-up - it’ll be nice.”
